The Video Show – I can’t see a thing. I’ll open this one is an exhibition presented in the black box gallery K4 and curated by Marie-Alix Isdahl. For the first iteration of this looped screening programme, artists have been invited to contribute their own work or propose a single film or video, from any period, that has resonance for them today. Considering the ways in which regimes of visibility operate, the exhibition explores how the artists have developed widely different strategies to intervene in the circulation of images and bring what is often familiar scenarios to a breaking point – yet not much happens. Evoking the disparate worlds of ancient Greek tragedy, ethnographic documentary, horror tropes, unphotographable sacred snake rituals, silent film, and gaming POVs, these works often harbour paradox: Events are at times threatening but not really violent, the pacing or repetition reduces action to abstraction, and quotidian scenes are elevated to something mythical and alluring, hence conjuring the many forms of affective engagement that we develop with and through machines of framing.
The exhibition is accompanied by the text THE FRAMING MACHINE by Louis Mason, attached as a pdf.
