You're Dead
September 25th - 27th
In Thora Dolven Balke’s sound installation You’re Dead, young voices recreate a reaction to a YouTube user’s comment describing his fear of dying and anxiety of missing out on the future advances of humanity. Responding to Flying Lotus’ video for “Never Catch Me”, from his album “You’re Dead”, the comment spurs a conversation about death and how to cope with life, from the perspective of youth. The voices are layered over binaural recordings of the city of New York and the people living in it. Life flows continuous and unaffected by the questioning of the works’ protagonists, creating interweaving layers of time and experience. Self-assuring, comforting and at times confrontational, the comments are punctured by moments of insight, empathy, humour and possible practical and philosophical solutions to one of life’s biggest mysteries. You’re Dead was originally conceived as 6 commissioned individual tracks for Daata Editions in 2016. At K4 it can be experienced as a complete composition and installation for the first time, within a scenography made for the gallery space.
